PANELING, WOULD LIKE TO LIGHTEN IT...HELP!!!

My existing paneling is a dark brown. Any hints on lightening it without painting. I was thinking about a white wash just to brighten it up. Please help!!! Any suggestions would be appreciated. MAHALO from hawaii
