will cost you more and will use longer boards. As a deck and arbor contractor, I NEVER build a deck with spliced boards as they will splinter and fail inverably at the intersections first.
I have had good luck with building a diamond shaped deck with 45 going in opposite directions and becoming shorter and shorter in the center. Looks good, but again you do have surface joints.
A herringbone design is fabulous, but again takes some experience on nice and tight joints.
Check out some deck books with designs and see how they look on paper before you shell out the $$$.
