It doesn't sound like a small mess to me. If it is a small mess, then you are right -- it's not a big deal.
If it is "all the debris" as he said in his post then it IS a big deal. I wouldn't leave this kind of mess but there are all kinds of people doing work these days and not taking responsibility to clean up.
