just moved into a 1977 home where the only substantial storage space is over the attached garage ceiling. The garage roof is trusses, fink style, and the bottom or what I guess you would think of as the joist of the trusses are 24 OC, 2X4 but metal plated together right at the middle. As it now stands, I don't want to put any storage weight on them. Can I shore up each "joist" by attaching a 2X4 to span the metal plate, then cover with 1/2 or 3/4 plywood for a storage floor? Are you allowed to drill framing screws into trusses? In general, what are all the concerns in converting a truss frame to a storage space? Can I figure it without using a structural engineer? Thanks.
