I am no professional, but I have been just fixing the cracks and priming, then painting. I have had no problems so far, and I am finishing up my second room. A paint guy I talked to the other day did say I should be using oil-based primer to stop porousness (I had used latex primer, which probably caused me to use more final coat paint than oil-based primer would have.)
