Thanks Henry. We do have a 9 year old boy and his friends so the traffic will be relatively heavy. The tough part of the decision is how best to integrate these two formerly separate rooms. We want the same flooring throughout. We thought about using a laminate but that gets quite pricey when compared to continuing with oak strip into the kitchen. We do have oak strip in our foyer/entry and although the shine has dulled, the wood likes fine otherwise.
I must admit, I'm not sure what a 'spit coat of shellac' means. Is shellac not an older organic based varnish? Also, do you how much time to dry it typically takes for polyurethane coats (assuming it's not raining and the windowns are open)?
