Waterproof finish over Lacquered Cabinets

My cabinets and woodwork in my new home were finished with lacquer but in wet areas they are already being damaged (less than two months use). What can I put over the lacquer that will protect the wood from the water and not turn yellow with time? Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
