control fo tree roots in sewer

I have recently had a flood in my basement due to tree roots in the sewer ( I was told this by the municipality which came to unplug the mess!)

Is my only option to remove the tree? Is there any device I can use to prevent water backing up into my basement should this blockage occur again?
My house is 38 years old.
