The key above was "infrequently". Rarely have we seen it in residential texture, but more often in commercial accoutical treatments and invariably in commercial fire proofing. The spray applications can look similar but be assured that asbestos fiber was rarely mixed into texture compounds, but when it was, it didn't crack.
To do an analysis, look in the yellow pages under "Laboratory Analytical". Lots of places do this analysis reasonably ($15 - $35). Request PLM (P-olarized L-ight M-icroscopy) bulk analysis.
