Glidden stains come in the same colors as the paint - Glidden's color system has 6,134 colors - plus you can match about anything you would like.
Why don't you try going to:
www.glidden.com - import a picture of your house - and play with the colors - you can change them to anything you like.
As for color rules - there are rules - but you should also do what you like - it is your house after all.
If you want to find out about the rules - find yourself a color wheel - should be able to find one at an artist supply store. A color wheel will help explain color theory and matching/coordinating.
