Ray if you are replacing a light with a fan you need to use the same hot wires for fan. If a new installation be careful and be sure power is off. If the fan has a light to be controled by remote be sure the wires to fan moter and light kit wires are wired seperately. Usually the instructions with the fan are pretty detailed.
