I called my local hardware store and spoke to a guy there who was a plumber for 30 years. He suggested that there may be a crack in the tank and, sure enough, I have noticed a crack in the glaze. I don't know if it goes all the way through the ceramic, but it sounds like a new toilet is my fix.
