Building Counters to Exisiting Ones

I recently moved into a home where a dishwasher was already plumbed into the wall. It does not have a counter over it, just cardboard and sits right next to the exisiting counter and countertops. Any suggestions on how to build a counter over the dishwasher to add it to the existing pieces? I plan to take the laminate off and replace it in the future. Thanks
