I just got rid of mine. Because it has asbestos I hired a plasterer who filled it in. It was time consuming and expensive but it looks beautiful.

My understanding is that there are several ways to go:

1. Plaster over it, i.e., fill it in and smooth it out.

2. Scrape it off.

3. Put drywall over it.

4. And the most economical is to simply go into denial.
