Staining Problem

I have recently had to replace some old moldings that were damaged. I replaced them with new wood - I think birch. I am trying to match to the old moldings that are nearby. The color of the old moldings is a very solid color.

I started with a wood conditioner and then put a total of four coats of stain trying to get the right color. I could not get it solid enough. The stain stayed very transparent. After it was dry, I wiped it down with mineral spirits and tried a gel stain that supposedly does not need to penetrate the wood. Nothing is working to make the stain look uniform. It is blotchy with spotting and a very light transparent color, no matter how dark the stain is that I use. Please help! I am on the verge of just painting it to save my sanity, but I know I will hate myself for it later.
