Cabin Lot Excavated

Posted by MarkG on May 16th, 2003 10:10 AM

My excavator just pushed out my lot for a 26'x28' cabin that I plan on starting this summer. The lot is on top of a mountain in central PA, and is very rocky with a 5' slope from front to back (5' slope in 26'). My excavator suggests trenching an 18" wide trench for the front and for half of each side, then doing a "frost footer" about 36" deep at the rear, and half of each side. I plan on then placing 18" wide x 10" deep concrete footers, to support the 8" concrete block walls. Would it be best to do all concrete in the 36" deep footer trench, or try to lay block on top of a 18"x10" deep footer in the trench. Also, I plan on putting 2" EPS insulation (horizontal) above the outside of the footer, and (vertical) up a foot or two to grade to better insulate the outside rear portion of the footings. Three interior 24"x24" pier footings (at 7' centers) also 8" deep, and 12" square blocks will support the main beam (four 2x12s). Any problems with these ideas, or any suggestions for a better way to do all of this. Great site... Thanks to all !
