there should be a pressure gauge between the pump and the filter. If the filter is the problem the gauge will register a high pressure. If the pump is the problem a low pressure will be indicated...normal pressure will vary but mine was between 5 and 10 lbs. When the gauge showed a press higher than 10, it was time to backwash the filter....don't know if all systems will register like pressures??????
