Sealing concrete floor for carpeting

Posted by Andrew in NY on May 19th, 2003 10:59 AM

We are in the process of re-finishing our basement, and removed 8"x8" asbestos/linoleum tiles that were glued down directly to the concrete (several were loose). In most places, the concrete is still covered with the mastic/adhesive used for the tiles. However, in other places, the concrete is bear (primarily at the seams between tiles), and seems to continue to "break-apart" while sweeping. We don't get big chunks of concrete coming up, just dust-like particles.

My question is, do I need to consider sealing the floor with anything prior to having wall-to-wall carpeting installed? I am concerned about the concrete dust working its way through the padding and carpeting over time. I assume the carpet company will have recommendations, but I figured it would not hurt to get more than one opinion.

I am planning on filling any actual holes with a patching compound. We will also be installing padding under the carpet.

The basement is dry.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrew
