Steve is exactly right. But there is one factor that you may not be considering and that is that wood changes color anytime you get it wet. With a film finish, the color change stays.

To test this, if you are planning to use a water based poly, wipe the floor off with a damp sponge. You don't have to do the whole floor, but it doesn't hurt if you do and then LIGHTLY sand after the first coat of poly. You can do the same thing with mineral spirits/paint thinner if you plan to use an oil based poly. The color shift can be pretty strong with either, but that is the "base color" you really are starting from.
