There is a Total Vegetation Killer made by Spectracide that promises no return growth for an entire year. It works. (This link shows what the container looks like: http://www.homeandgardensolutions.com/products/products-spec-wc-total-veg.html )
There is a gravel alley behind our house that weeds love and it looks hideous. I sprayed it June 2002 with the Spectracide product , there are no weeds as yet. Once new gravel is down, you could also try a product like Preen, a pre-emergent, to prevent new weed/grass growth. It works for about 3 months.
On size of gravel, we just had some delivered to a rural property for the driveway. The size recommended by the gravel company was "Grade 8 down to Fines & Screens". We order enough for a 4" layer, spread it out, ran a rented compactor over it and it looks great! Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
