It took a lot of time and patients, but I ended up using a heat gun to remove the paint. I bought one for about $25 from the local hardware store. It bubbles up the paint so that you can scrape it off. I then used some paint remover to get off the little spots that i couldn't get with the gun. It took forever, but it looks great. Good luck.
