Americast or Tub Installation? Posted by Billy on May 24th, 2003 01:25 PM In reply to Defect in Americast Tub? by Tom on May 24th, 2003 10:59 AM [Go to top of thread]
I haven't heard anything about a recall, but I've seen some Americast tubs delivered in poor condition, with the top flanges warped instead of flat.
In your case I wonder if the tub was installed correctly (by the plumber or by the tile installer?) If the tub was not installed solidly against the stringer that runs the length of the tub against the back wall, and the stringer was not attached solidly to the studs, then the tub could move.
It sounds like your tub was not installed correctly because it should have been fixed solidly in place and it should not move and separate from the grout after the tilework is completed. By the way, there should be caulk at the joint between the tub and the tile, not grout -- if your tileman grouted this joint then he did a very poor job, as a grout joint at this intersection will almost always crack.
How was the tub attached to the wall? Most installers use galvanized roofing nails but I like to use stainless screws and washers.
As to whether you also have problems with your Americast tub, I don't know.
Good luck, and report back to us what you find.
