May I suggest you purchase a basic wiring book from HD or Lowes. These books are pretty good for doing simple stuff. If you follow the caution rules (always part of these books), you should have no risk of shocking yourself. For most home wiring, you will find the circuit is either 15 amp (with 14 gage wire) or 20 amp (12 gage wire - the lower gage number means larger wire diameter). As long as you keep the same amperage breaker on the circuit you add the outlets to, you can use the same wire gage. If you're not sure what gage is in there, obtain a sample of each and compare the wire diameters (you can see the difference between 14 and 12 gage). Good Luck.
