In reply to Insulating an old house by Howie on February 28th, 1998 10:59 AM [Go to top of thread]

I have two questions. We have an over 100 yeay old house. Some of the walls and ceilings have been walled over with Drywall. We think that if we insulate, the extra weight of the insulation might be hazardous because the inner walls are so cracked and crumbling. We are also concerned about the attic. It is not insulated and several ceilings have been covered. Can we insulate without the house falling down.
Number 2 is which is the safest insulation for older homes. Cellulose or fiberglass and is special care needed to insulate older homes. Are either one safer to use than the other?
Also, what is the most effective way of venting an attic after insulating, that will last longterm. Turbines, fans, soffits, or combinations? Thank you, Ruth Beck
