You did not mention but could the switch be a 3 way.(Turn light on from different sides of room.) If that is case that is why the four wires. There are fan/light switches that have both combined into one switch with a slider for one of them. Best bet is find a person in one of the major home improvement centers and let them help. Remote is one way to go to avoid more wiring.
