There are several places where water is filtered and lint can accumulate. If not cleaned out it will smell musty or even like decay. Check your owners manual on user serviceable filters. For example, lifting the center hub on a top loading washer (below fabric sofener filler) will usually let you extract a long filter tube that needs to be cleaned out routinely.
