Find a suitable scrap of wood and paint it with the primer. Once it has dried, coat it with the red paint. If you don't get the color you wanted in two coats something went wrong with the tint and you need to take it back to the store for adjustment. Rather than pile on more coats (you already have 3 on the cabinets). Take the time to verify the color is correct before adding more. If the primer makes a difference, your path is clear. If you get the same bright red on the gray primer you need to have the store add some green to tone it down just a bit.
