regardless of the age, it really depends on how much you cook on it.
Every time my fuel runs out, I take out my lava rock, scrape and clean out all the gunk that falls down on the actual burners. Somethimes that dropping or ashes will completely restrict the flames from reaching the lava rocks and keep the temp down. It actually insulates the heat.
Sometimes, especially in very humid areas, the burner will actually rust and burn out in that amount of time and will need replacing. If I were you, I would remove the grate, remove the rock and then remove the other grate and examine the actual burning element. If rusted out and in bad shape replace it and your grill will be like new.
