Slate can be restored to look beautiful. The methods are similar to other stone and saltillo floors. The floor must be deep cleaned using a commercial floor scrubber. You can rent these at home improvement centers and janitorial supply stores now. They are very heavy, rotary machines that fit different brush or scrub-pad attachments. If the floor was sealed you need to strip the sealer with an alkalyn stripper. Ask at a janitorial supply. If stripped, the floor must be rinsed neutalized. Finally you will need a good quality penetrating sealer. This will protect the floor and bring out a lot of shine.

You may want to retain a professional, but it is a very worthwhile DIY project, but you will need to become familiar with some equipment and products you havn't used before. Look for a good janitorial supply in your area. They are usually very helpful and have the equipment and chemicals you need. Alternative may be stores that sell slate tile.
