grout coloring

I have the old fashioned small diamond shaped tiles in my baathroom and kithen I was thinking of changing the white grout to a balck or dark brown. I talked with on tile person who said i would have to replace the grout digging it out of those small tiles would be prohibited. Can I stain or dye the groout that is there? It is on good shape. Thanks
