Bev, there are many good polyurethane exterior finishes available. One possibility is Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane, but there are many more. Your best bet would be to go to a paint store in your area and get their suggestion of what exterior polyurethane holds up well there. There will be a change in the look of the pine as any finish is applied but there is no need to stain. Oil based polyurethane has an amber tint which many people find pleasing.

Some pine can be too starkly white if finished with a clear, water-based poly, in my opinion. The water based just does not last as well as oil based poly in tough application.
