Is this worth my time

Posted by Robert Howe on June 1st, 2003 06:02 AM

Im from Aberdeen, Maryland. a nice little place bordered by a city called Harve de grace from which i was born. before 1981 i spent almost every day traveling to a place called the fishing battery by boat, but i haven't been there since. I feel honored to say i basically grew up there, since most of my childhood surrounded this location. The fishing battery is a island in the chesapeake bay which is only accessable by boat and surrounded by water. The only thing on the island is a lighthouse built by john donahoo in the mid 1800's, so fortunately i can say i actually grew up at a lighthouse. we amongst other locals who would regularly show up there would basically take care of this island and keep it nice. Unfortunately, after researching its current condition on the internet i noticed its appearance is different than when i was a child. the lighthouse does appear run down and in poor condition. I can only view this lighthouse from pictures since i haven't been able to go there and see for myself which i would love to do. Unfortunately ties will keep me in South Carolina a little longer. I would love to see it restored before it is no more. It is owned and maintained by the Maryland dept of interior. It is apparently still a popular attraction for the locals and judging by the pictures some improvements have been made to the island itself but the lighthouse won't last forever unless its restored. The lighthouse is what makes the island the fishing battery and is an important part of history. Do you think it's worth my time to see what Bob Villa can do to get the lighthouse restored.
