Unfortunately- wood is still wood. It needs yearly maintenance to stay looking good. A lot of people purchase composites these days because of the relative lack of care that needs to be done to keep the deck looking good. But wood decks have always, and will always need attention in the form of a stain or topical water repellant applied every other season. It isn't maintenance free.
