routers are great tools and fun to use, but they do need allot of OJT with them. And too, sharp bits are the key. A dull bit will only make a mess of the wood and actually strain the motor. You will also find out that doing a round over edge for instance, going one direction is much easier than going the other. you will find this out. Bits with rollers on them make for a smooth non burning edge also.
I would get me a 1 x 12 x 8 and cut in to four pieces and just start routing.
Another point, fasten your work down cause the rpm's of the blade will cause the work to shoot away from the position when routing.
Here is what I do when routing a board, I will get some 2d finish nails and drive them into my work table and have them protruding up about 1/8 of an inch, then lightly tap the work onto these spikes and the work will stay in place. The small holes are easy to putty over.
