Table legs Posted by Henry in MI on June 8th, 2003 08:32 AM In reply to Tables by Mel on June 8th, 2003 02:54 AM [Go to top of thread]
Mel, are you talking about a workbench type table or a piece of furniture. How you design the skirt boards, those pieces that run between the legs, will determine the attachment. For furniture work, you can make mortise and tenon joints, dowel joints, or get metal hardware that lets you easily hold the table together while the legs can be removed with wing nuts. For more utilitarian pieces, screwing the legs to the skirt boards and either inside them or outside them are possibilities. One thing that you do want to consider if your table top will be more than a foot wide is that the wood will move across the grain and you will want to allow that to happen or that could tear the top or the table apart over time.
There are many plans, free and fee, available on the web. One place to start looking is at http://wickswww.freeyellow.com/. Wick's site has a long list of links to sites with a lot of plans for a lot of different projects. When you have built a couple of tables per the plans of others, you might feel more comfortable designing your own table.
