The real money is found with "celebrity" product endorsements and marketing rights. This is true of sports figures today, and was true of Bob Vila back in the vintage Old House days. My recollection is that BV left the program over a dispute involving product endorsements, and that PBS did not feel they were in the business of endorsing Sears and Roebuck. The show owns the marketing rights. Simply put, as any host's celebrity, name/face recognition and popularity increases, they will outgrow (no longer need) the medium that gave rise to such fame, and will find better opportunities available if marketing rights are not restricted by the show contracts.

As name recognition for Jim Thomas has increased, he now has opportunities that did not exist for him 10 years ago, and it is probably time for him to also move on and support his own line of products. It probably beats pounding nails for a living.
