I just got done tearing apart my 2 year old Kenmore top loader washer because the moldy/musty smell was just driving me nuts. Of course the [stupid] Sears appliance salesmen never heard of this {yeah right!), so after trying all of the obvious; leaving the lid open and running various chenicals through it, I tore it apart. Being very handy, I finally got to the bottom of the problem after I openend her way up. The problem was a build-up of blackened gook on the top inside of the tub that surrounds the inner basket where you put the clothes. I suspect this plastic tub is at the root of the problem (old washers used to be porcelin lined), but I don't know for sure. It could be an oily residue from liquid detergent or fabric softener, but no amount of chemicals was going to disolve this build-up. I had to use several nylon scrubbing pads and considerable elbow grease to remove it. I'd suspect a repariman would charge a pretty-penny for this service as it is extremely time-consuming. My washer does not have an odor anymore, but I am NOT looking forward to repeating this procedure again!
