removing paint from plaster wall

We are redoing our bathroom in our "new" 50 yo bungalow. On the lower part of the wall there appears to be "fake" tile.
Upon closer examination, it appears to be part of the plaster wall and not a sheet. How does one go about getting rid of this "tiling"? Thank you for any help.
