We recently purchased an old house (ca. 112 years). It is what is locally known as a "Carpenter's Victorian" It's a simple victorian style house, no formal trimwork, elements, etc. but very nice trim throughout. Anyways, the baseboards are decorative and approximtely 8" tall. I would like to put a chair rail in the dining room, however I'm not sure it would look "right" at the standard 36" height because the baseboard is so high. However, I am not willing to pull the original baseboard out and replace it with a smaller one. Should I forego the chair rail and just have the room all one color?
