are hard on any organic product. With paint, dark and bright colors do take a beating quicker than whites, grays, and those. But, there are some paint products that will surely last longer than a year.
Staining is another way, but you have to remove all that paint. Helman's polyurethane is good over a stain, but will also need re applying every other year.
