In reply to How does one paint asbestos shingles? by Susan McClellan on June 3rd, 1998 10:19 AM [Go to top of thread]

Name: Novice painter
Subject: Asbestos shingles
Question:
Would Sherwin Williams SuperPaint Exterior Flat Latex be a good product for painting asbestos shingle siding, or is there a better choice available? The shingles are old and there is very little of the old paint left on them at this point. Also, should they be primed first?

Answer:
Before you do anything, check the shingles for evidence of chalking. If you wipe your hand over the shingles and get a white powder on your hand, you've got chalking. If that's the case, pressure wash to remove as much chalk as possible and prime with Masonry Conditioner, reduced 300% with mineral spirits to seal the surface and seal the chalk in. Don't build a glaze with the conditioner. If the surface is not chalky, clean and prime with Loxon Exterior Masonry Primer. You can topcoat either of these products with two coats SuperPaint Exterior Flat Latex..
