Doors Posted by Henry in MI on June 14th, 2003 03:45 PM In reply to how to build doors for a small barn by Bill on June 14th, 2003 11:43 AM [Go to top of thread]
Bill, there are a lot of different ways to build doors but a major consideration is managing sag. As the door hangs from the hinges over years, it tends to pull itself apart and away from the hinged side. Therefore, diagonal bracing is key.
For what it's worth, you can look at one I built at http://wickswww.freeyellow.com/. This was 1/2" plywood with 1x3 edges and braces, as I remember. One interesting thing was that a plywood sheet was not big enough to make the whole door. I joined the sheets under the center brace and a buddy made a stainless steel sheet section--16 gauge--out of some scrap that he had to go over the back of the joint. The door was glued with Liquid Nails and galvanized deck screws to hold it together and seal the wood edges. It goes on a sliding track from the top but other doors on this 30 year old barn are hinged or Dutch doors or overhead garage doors. The doors have outlasted some of the siding but I only buit the one shown and patched the bottom of the garage doors.
