In reply to size of barn doors by Bill on June 15th, 2003 05:20 AM [Go to top of thread]

you know, hinges are the main problem as weight and the cantilever weight of the 4 foot wide doors. you will need a good turn buckle program on both doors to handle the sag. Using good material that is sturdy yet light is your challenge.

I have a work shed, that I customized built. I also wanted double barn type doors so I can get floor stand equip out and it easily. My doors are about 3 feet wide. I used heavy duty piano hinges and they work so well. Do not know if they will work on your longer doors though.

Another key is to have good king and cripple studs along the opening of the door so that they do not bow or budge causing door opening problems. I would consider constructing your doors out of treated 2x4/s that have dried out. Then use treated ply wood as the actual door material. Create a Z or X design in the centers and make them congruent with the other side. This design will actually be structuraly sound and keep the door square.

Attach your turn buckles and allow allot of adjustment open for sinching up.

Do not hang the doors with wet pt wood as this will and could be 30 percent heavier until it dries out.

Good luck.
