textured plaster walls

We own a 1913 stickley style home, and would like to hang some period appropriate wall paper. The problem is there is a skim coat over the original plaster which is heavily textured with deep vertical striations. What do we do? Does that skim coat have to get scraped off, or could we skim coat to fill in the striations? If so, how would we ensure it will adhere well, and also not leave us in a mess if we wall papered but some day wanted to change it?
