EH, what's under the paneling? Typically, there is a regular drywall wall surface under the paneling. The paneling can be glued or nailed to the wall. Even if the paneling is glued, pulling off the paneling may result in only minor surface problems.
I suggest that you take off a couple of electric switch or plug cover plates and see if you can get an idea where you actually are.
