restain cedar siding

Posted by Gary on June 19th, 2003 08:40 AM

I have rough-sawn cedar siding on a house I purchased. Former owner used a clear stain called Sunshield. Wood is black in many areas.
I tried an opaque stain (Cuprinol) on a small area.It went on very well, and looks good.Ihave been told I should power wash first...but am reluctant to do this.I know about bleaching mildew, etc. What about putting one coat of stain on and see what happens? If black comes back, I could power wash in a year or two, then restain.
