sounds like you have a swivel joint

that needs to be unthreaded from the shower arm. take two channel lock pliers and remove the swivel joint from the shower arm coming out of the wall. If this is not feasible you will have to change out the shower arm completely with a new one. be sure and use teflon tape on the threaded joint that goes back into the wall if you have to the change the whole arm out. good luck LJ
