The distance between posts are dependent upon the size of the bearing member it is supporting and the size of the footing that can be buillt. The bearing member(horizontal) will be much smaller for posts set 4 foot on center than for one set 8 feet on center. More than likely, the specifics can be found in your local building code or through a quick call or trip down to the building inspectors office.
