Hanging pictures Posted by Henry in MI on June 24th, 2003 12:36 PM In reply to Hanging pictures up on plaster walls by michelle on June 24th, 2003 11:18 AM [Go to top of thread]
Michelle, there are several different kinds of hangers that will work well for you. There is usually no need to drill a hole. Some hangers have glue on backs that stick to the wall. Other hangers have a nail-like shape with a flange to keep you from driving them in too far. Many have nails that support special pieces to hold the picture wire. If you use the ones that are hammered in, you canput a piece of tape over the area before you drive the nail to prevent chip-out as much as possible. You might want to look in your favorite home center for available options and a realistic weight figure for the picture that you want too hang might help you decide this if it does appear big or heavy.
Plaster walls are done with wet plaster that goes over the lath that's behind the plaster. The plaster that goes behind the lath are called keys. With age and movement of the house, sometimes the plaster is still up but it's just hanging there, not attached with the keys. I can't tell from your description if this is the case with your place or not, but it does sound like you should check this out before you spend a lot for paint or paper on walls that may come down pretty easily. If you push on a wall and the plaster moves pretty easily, this could be the case.
