Had something similar, but also had tiny holes in clothes. Tubs of washers are steel that is "punched" with holes at the factory, then porcelin is applied as a coating. After several years, some of the coating wears off and the steel starts to rust. As the spin cycle activates, the clothes are slung against the sides of the tub with sufficient centrifical force to cause the fabric to be mashed into the holes (that are ragged and rusty ). As the spin cycle ends, the clothes drop down and of course they tear as they fall off the sides of the tub.
We destroyed a bunch of clothes with rust and snags before we bought a new washer. Some of the high end models now have stainless steel tubs.I don't think the make them that way to be shiny. Good luck !!!! PS ---Or tell your husband to take the nails out of his pockets before he tosses them in the washer!!!!!!!
